Professional Trainings

The International Institute for Somatic Movement Education presents a professional training in Somatic Movement Education  (leading to the qualification of Somatics Movement Educator).

The vision and purpose of this institute is to graduate students who can enable clients to actualize their full potential as free somas. A free soma means one who is free to move with ease without pain, and to be able to achieve their life goals and purpose without limitation. The institute was inaugurated in February 2007 on the auspicious night of Shivaratri at the foot of the holy mountain Arunachala, Tiruvannamalai, South India.

Three 8-day modules of professional training are offered by the Institute covering somatology, functional anatomy and kinesiology, somatic philosophy, neurophysiology, the protocols, lessons and techniques of Somatic Movement Education (SME). By the end of the course all educators will be fully competent in teaching their clients to understand the cause of their pain and training them in specific protocols and movements to eradicate it.

The whole body of this work is based on the somatic tradition of Thomas Hanna, a student of Moshe Feldenkrais. In the spirit of that tradition the primary focus of this work is to empower clients and students to master their own self-healing capacities.

Somatic Movement Education is not a new approach to treating pain it is a new understanding as to the causative factors. It is not alternative medicine, it is good science based on simple neurophysiology. It is the missing link between health and disease.

Testimonials

“This intense Somatic training has been an inspiring experience, a remarkable journey into rediscovering the joy of being alive. The teaching was clear, concise and effective. The training opened up into a deeper dimension of insights and experience of “the living body” as a functional unity where body and mind merge. After 16 years of practicing different approaches to body work, I have found a straightforward, well-grounded, effective technique.  I can clearly perceive how this learning experience is not only an asset at the personal level but also for my clients as it is work that empowers the receiver, putting them back at the “drivers seat” of their life.” Joan Sala. Author of  “Awareness Through the Body”.

“This training has been extremely valuable to me for my personal growth and awareness. I feel as if it has made me, not only more conscious of my body and its holding patterns but also more aware of how my body’s stiffness is constraining my mind and my whole being. The movements have worked on my whole neural system, expanding my awareness and making me a more integrated being. I feel more open and expanded to the world and less confined in my body, mind and spiritual awareness. I would call it a more practical guide to enlightenment than a set a physical exercises.” Pratima Mumford Septhon. Designer.
